Key Peronnel

RHIMA

RHIMA, De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre was born as a result of the joint efforts of the Office bearers and members of two organizations based in Kochi, Kerala, India.

The ROTARY CLUB OF COCHIN HARBOUR is an established service oriented club of 25 years standing with an envious reputation of successfully completing community-based projects. The club has over the years won many awards in recognition of work done in this field.

THE INDIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, COCHIN WEST, is an association of the medical fraternity within the Cochin West area with a track record of dedicated charitable activities aimed at promoting health of the residents in the area through conducting health and hygiene awareness programmes, free medical camps, symposiums and undertaking various projects towards the set goals of the association.

All members of these two service organisations are continuously involved in assisting the functioning of the centre and always make themselves available when required. The initial level of enthusiasm still continues and it is an intense dream of all concerned to see the Project become a great success.

The centre started functioning on 26th June 2004

BACKGROUND

The centre is ideally located in Cochin West - an area that encompasses residents of urban towns of Fort -Kochi, Mattancherry, Palluruthy and up to Chellanam covering a population of around 500,000. The gamut of activities at the centre is specially focused to benefit residents of the coastal belt, where fishing is the main stay and alcohol abuse is comparatively more prevalent than in other areas. Mattancherry is an area where drug and substance abuse dominates and the teenage population, at this impressionable age is more suspect to the pressures of indulging in these deleterious activities. A recent study identifies Mattancherry as one of the most sensitive areas for substance abuse in India. The centre is located at Kaithaveli, near Manachery on the Kannamaly road 5 km from Fort Kochi. Far from the maddening crowd, yet within calling distance of the comforts of the city and with the Arabian Sea in the horizon, the centre provides just the right ambience for the treatment of patients under the bondage of Alcohol and Substance abuse. It is therefore no surprise that within a short span the centre has had patients from all over the State of Kerala.

THE CENTRE

The RHIMA centre is a 15 bedded centre devoted to the de-addiction and rehabilitation of Alcoholics and Drug Abusers. Situated in a well enclosed 50 cent plot, the centre is at present located in a double story building and provides sufficient area for physical activities like gardening, volleyball etc in addition to the therapeutic treatment. At the centre, a patient is admitted for a 30-day treatment package. The treatment, provided free of charge, aims at providing holistic treatment to the patients where, in addition to therapeutic treatment, emphasis is also laid on building the spiritual and moral stature of the patient. It's dedicated and committed resident staff are supported and directed by the INDIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION COCHIN WEST with the active involvement of professionals like psychiatrists, psychologists, medical practitioners, social workers and counselors.

It is now noticed that, with larger number of patients visiting the centre, the infrastructure and facilities originally designed are beginning to burst at the seams and plans will have to be urgently put in place for further expansion.
